Guide to Obtaining a Kenyan Driving Licence

Obtaining a Kenyan driving licence unlocks the freedom to cruise Kenyan roads. Luvisia Digital is here to guide you through the application process smoothly and ensure you hit the road legally.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for a Kenyan driving licence, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a valid Kenyan National ID card.
  • Pass a driving theory test and a practical driving test conducted by an approved driving school.
  • Be medically fit to drive (obtain a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner).

The Application Process

There are two main stages to obtaining your Kenyan driving licence:

Stage 1: Learner’s License

  1. Enroll in a Driving School: Choose a reputable driving school licensed by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
  1. Learner’s Licence Application: The driving school will assist you with the application process for your learner’s licence. This typically involves submitting your National ID copy, passport photos, and a medical certificate.
  1. Theory Test: Once your application is approved, you’ll take a computer-based driving theory test at the NTSA testing centre.

Stage 2: Driving Licence

  1. Driving Lessons: Complete the required driving lessons prescribed by your driving school.
  1. Practical Driving Test: Demonstrate your driving skills during a practical driving test conducted by an NTSA-approved examiner.
  1. Driving Licence Application: Upon passing the practical test, the driving school will assist you with the final application for your official driving licence. Here’s what to expect during the final application stage, typically handled with the assistance of your driving school:

Documents and Fees

  • Learner’s Licence: Your driving school will likely keep your original learner’s licence for submission with the application.
  • Payment: There will be a fee associated with issuing your official driving licence. The driving school will inform you of the amount and preferred payment methods (e.g., M-Pesa, credit card).

The Application Process (Handled by Driving School)

  1. Application Submission: The driving school will submit your application electronically to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) along with your learner’s licence and proof of payment.
  1. Data Verification: The NTSA will verify your information and driving test results.
  1. Licence Issuance: Once approved, the NTSA will process your official driving licence.

Collection:

  • Collection Options: Your driving school will inform you of the collection options. This may involve picking up your licence directly from the NTSA office or a designated Huduma Centre.
  • Collection Timeline: There may be a waiting period between application approval and licence collection. The driving school will provide an estimated timeframe.

Important Note: Processes and fees may be subject to change. Always double-check with the NTSA website or your driving school for the latest information.
